Student visa requirements for Malta

To study in Malta, international students from non-EU countries must obtain a Malta Student Visa. The first step is to secure an admission or offer letter from a recognized Maltese university or college. You must hold a valid passport that remains valid for your entire study period and complete the official visa application form. Applicants are required to show proof of sufficient financial means to cover tuition fees, accommodation, and living expenses during their stay in Malta.

You must also provide proof of accommodation, such as a rental agreement or confirmation from your educational institution, along with valid health insurance that covers medical emergencies and repatriation (minimum coverage of €30,000). Other required documents include passport-sized photographs, academic certificates, and a statement of purpose explaining your study goals. Once the visa is approved, students are allowed to enter Malta and must apply for a residence permit if their course lasts more than 90 days.

How to apply for a visa

  1. Get admission from a recognized Maltese university or college.
  2. Collect required documents (passport, admission letter, proof of funds, accommodation, insurance, academic certificates).
  3. Fill out the visa application form online or from the Maltese Embassy/VFS Global.
  4. Book an appointment at the nearest Maltese Embassy or VFS Global center.
  5. Attend the visa interview and submit all documents.
  6. Pay the visa fee and provide biometric data (photo and fingerprints).
  7. Wait for visa processing (usually takes a few weeks).
  8. Once approved, receive your student visa and travel to Malta.
  9. If your course is longer than 90 days, apply for a residence permit after arrival.

What to do once you get your visa?

After receiving your Malta student visa, you can begin preparing for your move. First, book your flight and ensure you have all essential documents, including your passport, visa, admission letter, proof of finances, and health insurance. Before traveling, make sure your accommodation in Malta is confirmed, whether through university housing or private rental. Once you arrive, you should register at your university to complete the enrollment process and gain access to student facilities.

If your study program lasts longer than 90 days, you must apply for a residence permit at the Identity Malta Agency within your first few weeks. It’s also advisable to open a local bank account, get a Maltese SIM card, and confirm your health insurance coverage. Attend orientation sessions organized by your university to learn about campus life, academic expectations, and local regulations. By completing these steps, you’ll ensure a smooth transition into your studies and stay in Malta.
