Student visa requirements for Spain

To obtain a student visa for Spain, international students must meet several key requirements. Applicants need a valid passport and an official acceptance letter from a recognized Spanish university or educational institution. They must complete the national visa application form and provide proof of sufficient financial means to cover tuition fees and living expenses, typically through recent bank statements or a sponsorship letter. Additionally, students must show proof of accommodation in Spain, such as a university dormitory confirmation or a rental agreement.

A valid health insurance policy that covers the entire stay in Spain is mandatory. Applicants are also required to submit a medical certificate confirming they are free from any diseases that could pose a public health risk, and in many cases, a police clearance certificate showing no criminal record. Passport-sized photographs, proof of paid tuition fees, and translations or legalization of documents (if not originally in Spanish) are also necessary. Meeting all these requirements ensures that students are fully prepared for their studies and legal stay in Spain.

How to apply for a visa

  1. Receive your admission letter from a recognized Spanish university or educational institution.
  2. Gather all required documents, including passport, acceptance letter, financial proof, medical certificate, police clearance, and health insurance.
  3. Translate and legalize your documents into Spanish if needed.
  4. Book an appointment at your nearest Spanish Embassy or Consulate in your home country.
  5. Complete the visa application form (National Visa for Studies – Type D).
  6. Pay the visa fee at the time of submission (fees vary by country).

  9. Once approved, collect your visa and check the details for accuracy.

What to do once you get your visa?

Once you receive your Spain student visa, you can begin preparing for your move. First, carefully check your visa details to ensure all information is correct, including your name, course dates, and institution. Next, book your flight and make sure all essential documents—passport, visa, acceptance letter, proof of funds, and insurance—are easily accessible during travel. Before departing, confirm your accommodation arrangements in Spain, whether through university housing or private rental.

Upon arrival, it’s important to apply for your residence card (TIE – Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) within 30 days, as it officially allows you to live and study in Spain. You must also register your address at the local town hall (empadronamiento), which is often required for administrative purposes. Opening a Spanish bank account and obtaining a local SIM card will help you manage your daily needs. Finally, attend your university’s orientation program to learn about academic expectations, student support, and local culture. Completing these steps ensures a smooth and legal start to your studies in Spain.
